Meet Sandy Newsome

_MG_8983.jpg

Sandy moved to Cody in 1982 after graduating from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Animal Science.  She was hired by the Wyoming Department of Agriculture as the meat inspector serving the Big Horn Basin.  In 1983 Sandy met her husband, Bob, and they married in 1989.  At that time, Sandy joined Bob full time at Sunlight Sports, the outdoor store that he started in 1971. They have one son, Wiley, and one cat, Miss Kitty!

As a business owner in Cody for over 30 years, Sandy has worked on budgets, financial projects and personnel issues. Her businesses have survived in bad times and thrived in good times.  Sandy and Bob have always balanced their budgets and saved money during good times to offset the downturns they knew were coming.  This experience has served Sandy well as she has taken on the challenges of the state’s economy.

Sandy was appointed twice by Governor Mead to serve on statewide boards.  She served on the Wyoming Tourism Board from 2011 to 2017 and was Chairman in 2016.  Sandy also served on Commission of Judicial Conduct and Ethics.

While serving on the Wyoming Tourism Board, Sandy held the offices of Vice Chairman and Chairman.  Her service to the tourism industry on the Wyoming Tourism Board has given Sandy insight on the legislative budget process. Significant cuts had to be made to the Wyoming Tourism budget recently.  Sandy guided the board through a thoughtful and strategic process to make cuts that would have the least impact upon the tourism industry which is so important to Park County.

Sandy also serves on the Forward Cody Board and served as chairman for three years. Sandy has been an investor since the beginning of this great organization.  First and foremost, Forward Cody is focused on retention and expansion of existing Cody businesses.  They strive to maintain and enhance our economic status as a community.

Sandy loves to spend time in the outdoors. Skiing, hiking and camping are her favorite activities.  She love to travel and have been fortunate enough to enjoy destinations around the world.
